"Waiter...excuse me? Waiter? Yes, is my meal almost ready?"
"Ma'am, you just ordered it. It will be out in a few minutes."
I am sitting in a restaurant sipping on my never-failing "water no ice." I had ordered my meal 30 seconds ago. I review my meal in my mind. For starters I had ordered a fresh salad with strawberries, blueberries, apples, roasted pecans and a raspberry vinaigrette dressing. Then follows a nice juicy steak (medium well) topped with grilled onions and mushrooms. Sides? Grilled asparagus with lemon pepper dipping sauce and soft fluffy mashed potatoes with cheddar cheese and sprinkled with crispy bacon bits. Never forget dessert!!! Dessert is a slice of chocolate mousse cake and vanilla bean ice cream. These are garnished with chocolate shavings, strawberries, a mint leaf and a drizzle of chocolate syrup.
I excitedly wait for my delectable meal. I cannot wait to feast! After a while, I start getting impatient. I have been here 1.38 minutes and have not yet received my salad!!! My response? I take one more sip of water, get up, grab my purse and sunglasses and strut out of the restaurant.
How brainless is this? I asked for this food but did not wait long enough for it. When they bring it out, I will not be there to receive it. I must have not really wanted the food.
Many times, our prayers are just like this restaurant scene. We ask God for something, but because He does not answer within our time frame, we become upset. When God is ready to give us what we asked, we are no longer there to receive it. We must have not really wanted what we asked for; we have failed to wait for God.
Psalm 25:4-5
"Show me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths. Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation: on thee do I wait all the day."
Do we really wait on Him all the day? He wants to give us more of Himself; He longs to answer us, but we walk out on Him. Now, those of you who know me well enough, know I would NEVER walk out on a meal like the one described above (making the scenario completely fictitious). What God offers to us is so much greater than any meal...why do we chose to walk out on that?
...if it is true that God alone is goodness and joy and love, if it is true that our highest blessedness is in having as much of God as we can, if it is true that Christ has redeemed us wholly for God and made a life of continual abiding in His presence possible, nothing less ought to satisfy us than to be ever breathing this blessed atmosphere, "I wait on thee."
